WATER IS LIFE:Understanding the Global Water Crisis and Where Our Drinking Water Comes From  Integrating Science and Technology (High School)

56c204981900002a00377b0b

OVERVIEW: Beginning by listening to the SPI Learning Lab personal narrative of scientist / advocate for clean water Deepika Kurup, students will understand the global water crisis occurring in countries throughout the world and efforts being made to solve it. Referencing How New York Gets Its Water (NY Times interactive), students will investigate what sources of water supply the Town of Hinsdale. This will involve research and /or community outreach to the Town of Hinsdale Water Dept., understanding aquifers, how drinking water is protected, and the monitoring and testing of drinking water. Further discussion can be centered on problem solving, i.e. the National Academy of Engineering 14 Grand Challenges and what you can do using science, technology, engineering, and math to change our world.

An English Literacy teacher and Social Studies teacher will be co-teaching a unit titled HOW CAN IDEAS BE CORRUPTED? in March 2017 and are now working with SPI to incorporate Story Preservation material and an original SPI project into the unit.  So, here’s what we’re developing.

Students will listen to the audio narrative of Natural Resources Defense Council founder Gus Speth as he discusses the history of the environmental movement and climate change. They will then watch the documentary film THE MERCHANTS OF DOUBT in which historians Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway explain how a loose–knit group of high-level scientists, with extensive political connections, ran effective campaigns to mislead the public and deny well-established scientific knowledge over four decades. Students will then participate in Socratic seminars in which they will orally present their views on the topic, backed up by research.  Students will also create a timeline, mapping the history of the environmental movement.
